Do trade show attendees pay in advance for purchases??? You can't imagine how difficult it has been to get this information! I have to attend the next MAGIC show in Vegas and will be showing a brand new line of men's clothing. This is my first trade show and I do NOT know if the attendees who come to our booth and want to place orders have to pay for them right then and there. Obviously, as I will need their entire payment to go back home and get their product order MANUFACTURED, it would be fantastic if they paid right then and there. Does anyone know anything about this?? The MAGIC staff does not have information about this for me. I called and spoke to several people there in the last month and still cannot get an answer.

Interdependence and the gains from trade? Consider two neighboring island countries called Bertland and Ernamia. They each have 4 million labor hours available per week that they can use to produce wheat, clothing, or a combination of both. The table below shows the amount of wheat or clothing that can be produced using one hour of labor. Bertland4 (Wheat) 5(clothing) Ernamia6 (wheat) 3 (clothing) Initially, before these countries begin trading goods, Bertland uses 1 million hours of labor per week to produce clothing and 3 million hours per week to produce wheat, while Ernamia uses 3 million hours of labor per week to produce clothing and 1 million hours per week to produce wheat. Assume there are no other countries willing to trade goods, so when there is no trade between these two countries, each country consumes the amount of wheat and clothing it produces. 3.1. Without any trade, Bertland will produce (and consume) ___ of clothing and ____ of wheat in a week. (Hint: Remember your answer to this question because you will use it in some of the questions that follow.) A. 9 million garments; 6 million bushels B. 20 million garments; 16 million bushels C. 5 million garments; 4 million bushels D. 5 million garments; 12 million bushels
How to execute a proposal to executives that could possibly benefit the company and me at the same time? I have worked with the same company now for 2 years and I absolutely love my job. I work for a worldwide company that participates in trade shows fairly often and I have wanted to attend these shows since I began working here. What I would like to do is come up with a plan that I can present that shows my interest and dedication. My problem is this job has not been offered. I would love to become the “spokes model” for this company. Not to sound vain but I know that I am a very confident, attractive, workingwomen and am very capable of attracting new clients. The people that they have attending these shows now are all older men. About 80% of this company is men. My plan includes asking for a trial period that consists of maybe 5 trade shows. If this proves to attract new business then I attend all “major” shows. (I am still capable of doing my regular job duties while attending trade shows.) If everything pans out I would expect a slight pay raise and bonuses for attracting new clients. I would also ask that they provide me with all resources needed to perform this job, i.e., hair, nails and clothes for the shows. So my question to you is…. How should I present this plan (phone, email, face to face)? Face-to-Face would be hard because the VP of sales rarely comes into the office. Do you feel that this plan is something that sounds very appealing? If not what do you think could make it better? Is it okay to present this when I haven’t been asked?

We have been going to them for the last 4 years and each time we go my oldest son seems to get diarrhea for the first full day.( There is no where to wash clothes on the strip of Las Vegas and I am not paying the hotel to do it!) And can't seem to sleep well the night we get there. The trip is over 12 hours long by car. Any ideas on how we can get there smoothly??? Does this happen with your kids?? Thanks and have a great weekend! Jennifer Cottonwood, CA We do traval from our house to my parents house quite often. Which is about a 3 hour trip. We are going to make stops so that he can run around. We also have an 8 month old little boy too! So, we have to stop every 2-4 hours so that I can nurse him!
America is a very advanced country as far as technology is concerned? but now i have seen being here for time being for 6 months that all the goods which are sold here in the market are most of them are made in china. As far as i remember that few years ago we used to purchase things made in U.S.A. but now its seldom shown. Most of the items are made in china as they r now in the market in india too.Are the items send to india and America are of the same quality or for America they send the better quality goods, as America will not trade with them if they send them the bad ones as they send to india for cheap ,but they r not relieable there. Why it has happend so that America is depending on china for goods rather than producing his own goods now a days? all the furnitures and crockery goods to clothes are all made in china ?Being super power doesnot he get time for all these now a days and he is busy with the new technologies like space and for army prupose?please give u r comments?
How can I find and do business with good, legitimate, manufacturer, Distributors or wholesalers? I am interested in buying and selling fashion items mainly lingerie/sexy intimate wear, clothing for young women and perhaps giftwear. When I'm ready to start buying the products my budget will be a few thousand dollars to buy products, then I can sell and re-buy. I have searched online and found an endless number of people posing as wholesalers, when their prices are much too high to be wholesalers. I don't want to charge my customers too much, but I also want to make a profit. I also am willing to go to trade shows, but the best ones are in New York and internationally. I don't have the tools to do that kind of traveling (mainly financial). Any ideas?
Why do you people think China will do better than India, economically? Both China and India have unleashed pent-up economic energy, but they’re not traveling the same development path. China has followed the traditional route, becoming a center for low-wage manufacturing and exporting clothing, toys, electronics and other goods. India has emphasized services, using its large English-speaking labor force for call centers, data-processing operations and the like. Growth rates give China’s goods-dominated strategy the better track record so far. But India’s approach may pay off better longer term. A look at per capita incomes around the world shows that the wealth of nations eventually depends more on services than industry. India possesses advantages that bolster a services strategy. Two are legacies of British rule: large numbers of English-speaking workers and familiarity with the West. India also offers an ample supply of educated workers, many of them college graduates available at a fraction of what they could earn in the U.S. and other advanced economies. China’s labor force includes larger numbers of educated workers, but the country has a ways to go before matching India’s advantages in language, cultural compatibility and communications technology. India also had the blessing of good timing. Services trade has surged in recent decades, providing new opportunities in the global marketplace. Two factors are at work. First, the Internet and other technologies have made international communications faster and cheaper, lowering barriers to marketing and delivering services over vast distances. Second, rising incomes have shifted consumers’ spending from goods, boosting demand for services and making it an engine for economic growth. Globalizing companies exploit new technologies by moving services work to low-wage economies—an extension of domestic outsourcing known as offshoring. To meet the needs of foreign multinationals, Indian companies offer services that include computer programming, tax return processing, back-office numbers-crunching, debt collection and cross-border tutoring. One database of the business-processing segment of India’s offshoring industry lists more than 900 companies employing almost 575,000 workers. In addition to the homegrown services companies, multinationals like Dell and IBM have established their own operations in India. The country’s major offshoring firms, for their part, have gone global, even setting up operations in China and the U.S. Although the tentacles of India’s service providers stretch around the globe, the chief export destinations are the U.S., Britain and the Middle East. Industry experts extol India’s edge in delivering global services. Business consultant A.T. Kearney put India at the top of its 2007 Global Services Location Index, based on such factors as cost, worker skills and information technology infrastructure. Jones Lang LaSalle, another consultant, included the Indian cities of Bangalore, Delhi and Chennai on its list of the 10 lowest-cost offshoring destinations. India’s fastest-growing services exports are linked to offshoring. Business services, which make up a quarter of the country’s services exports, shot up 107 percent in 2006 and 138 percent in 2007. Software services, two-fifths of the services exports, rose about 33 percent each of the past two years. Financial services exports may be relatively small, but they grew roughly 140 percent in both 2006 and 2007. These recent gains build on earlier ones. In the past decade, India’s services sales have risen from 18 percent to 38 percent of all exports, topping the 30 percent of the U.S., the largest seller of services in the global marketplace. At the same time, China’s services sales have fallen from 13 percent to 8 percent of all exports, confirming that sales have risen faster for its goods than its services. India expects even greater success selling its services in the future. The Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry, the country’s largest business group, estimates services exports will more than triple in the next five years, growing much faster than goods shipments and reaching more than 50 percent of total exports in 2012. The largest chunk of any country’s services output meets its consumers’ demand for such things as transportation, recreation, and help around the office, store and house. In developing economies, many of these domestic services involve low-productivity work, and they’re rarely exported. By contrast, globally traded services tend to be knowledge-intensive, requiring more-educated and productive workers. What India sells doesn’t match the sophisticated services exports of the U.S. and other advanced economies. However, India’s exports are more likely to be at the top end of its services hierarchy. In fact, export success has allowed India to achieve a high level of services productivity for a nation at its stage of economic development. A typical Indian services worker generat A typical Indian services worker generates over $25,000 a year in output—significantly more than Russia, a country with four times the per capita income. India more than doubles the services productivity of Indonesia, a country with similar per capita income. Average income is four times higher in Turkey and more than twice as high in Mexico, two countries that eclipse India in services productivity. That's all. Kind Regards and Happy New Years to Everyone. Economics Student

If customers complained about the odor of your business colleagues, how would you address it professionally? I run a trade show and it is one of the exhibitors. He wears the same clothes for all 4 days of the show and smells really, really awful. Actually about 3 of them smell awful. We only do a show there twice a year, but this has been going on for years. I think it's time to address it, but I don't know how. Should I bring a bag of deodorant and put it behind their booth at the next show? Or should I write them a letter detailing the complaint? I just don't know what to do. It's a unique situation. I run a trade show and it is one of the exhibitors. He wears the same clothes for all 4 days of the show and smells really, really awful. Does just wanting to feel powerful and respected reason enough to buy a nice suit? Usually when i go out I get the feeling that im not being taken serious enough by people. Plus the fact that I'm a young 21 year old black male doesn't exactly make thing too much better (in my eyes). It could be some of the clothes im wearing (i don't dress like the stereo typical black guy with the white tee, baggy pants half way off the butt) I actually look down on that look. I usually wear polo shirts and fitted but slightly baggy sean jean jeans. But with 2009 coming up i want to set a new look. Plus im starting a Business on ebay and having a nice suit i feel that ppl could take me more seriously if i want to buy something a say trade shows are whatever. Bottom line, could i justify spending $300-$400 dollars on a designer suit (Men's warehouse is having a special where you buy 1 designer suit get another free) just to wear casually regardless of the reason?
WHERE DO WE GO FROM iin sex education to our kids? Standard sex education today "tends to be morally bankrupt. It begins with a biological description of sexual function and fertility (known in the trade as the organ concert) and it ends with indoctrination in conception, abortion and venereal disease. Basic to this pedagogy is the belief that youngsters will not accept moral ideals and should at least (or at most) be helped to cut their losses." - Father James Burtchaell Raising children these days is not an easy job. No wonder many Americans do not want to get married, and if they do, do not want to have children. Each child needs the individual attention of both parents, and time, a most precious gift that we are sometimes unable to find for our children. Parents who were themselves raised either in a different country or in a different generation, where peer pressure was different, have more difficulty in raising today's children. They also do not get much help from television or the school system. What kinds of suggestions do I have for them. First of all, I do not like using the phrase, 'setting limits'. No one likes to take orders these days in this free society. A better term would be educated guidelines for both parents and youth. Even better is the term 'informed consent', the kind we use in medicine before asking a patient to agree to a procedure or a test. Once a person is informed of the consequences of right and wrong, then he or she can make an intelligent decision. Unfortunately, smaller children are not able to make that decision for themselves, so parents will have to do it for them until the child reaches the age of maturity. Children have a right to be treated as people, in an environment that is conducive for their growth and maturity and to become useful citizens. Children have a right to love, care, discipline and protection from their parents. Children have a right to receive education and financial protection for the future. Parents have a right to receive love, respect and affection from their children. Parents have a right to educate and discipline their children. Parents have a right to know about their children and monitor other influences affecting them. Parents have a right to say no to unusual financial and other demands of children. The next question is, "Why set limits or give guidelines? Why not let the boat sail without a sail in an uncharted sea?" If it does, most likely this boat will end up at a destination where it never wanted to be. Thus, not only do we need to prepare for the present but also for the future. All those children who are adults now, who were reared with discipline, appreciate what their parents did when they were children in terms of discipline, although it appeared at that time that the discipline was too tough." The next question becomes, "In what areas should we set limits? The most important area is time management. Children, as well as adults, waste too much time in watching TV, listening to music, talking on the telephone, and other unnecessary activities. They must realize that whatever time they are wasting, they are taking it away from some more useful work like homework or housework. Therefore, they must set limits and assign priorities with respect to their time management. Their health comes first. Next comes homework and education and then time spent in improving interpersonal relationships. Another question is who should set the limit? Traditionally, it is seen as the father's role and sometimes the mother's role, an elder brother for a younger brother, or an elder sister for a younger sister. On the other hand, the truth is the one who is better qualified and more experienced should set the limits for the one who is less qualified and less experienced. In terms of religion, the one with stronger faith and righteous deeds should set limits for the one who has less, regardless of age. Sometimes it is seen that the parents are less practicing Muslims than the children themselves. In that case, the children should advise the parents. Teachers have a much greater role to play. However, the limits should be taken in the light of permission and responsibility from God. SOME SUGGESTIONS TO PARENTS Choose a good neighborhood school. Know the teachers personally and interact with them. Neglected children expose themselves to various abuses. Supervise their homework. Watch TV with your children and select good educational and entertainment programs. Comment on the negative aspects of the program. Cut down TV time to less than twelve hours on weekdays and twenty-two hours on weekends. Encourage outdoor activity. Encourage them to read newspapers and good magazines Growing children may not obey an order, but they will do things out of love and respect for their parents. Love and respect on a mutual basis is our best weapon against all the negative influences. Parental love should be unconditional and not based on their achievements. Love should not be confused with permissiveness or overlooking a child's faults. Pointing out faults of the child should not diminish the love by the parents. Children are not bom knowing all the rights or wrongs in social norm. They need clear guidelines about good and bad behavior. The greatest effect is the parent's attitude, example and behavior rather than words. Parents should set the same standards for themselves as they set for their children and share with them information of all kinds whether related to the outside world or inside the family. It is not the knowledge which hurts but the lack of it, or misuse of it, which causes problems. Parents should help children to make appropriate decisions and be responsible for them. Younger children can only make decisions about the present (i.e., what clothes to wear that day), but older children can make decisions that may affect their future, under parental guidance (i.e., selection of school, college and career). Children should be taught to share household work, keep their desk and room clean, and how to handle their 'own' money. Let them spend all their money and suffer from the lack of it. The overprotective and anxious parent cannot raise a confident child ready to deal with the real world. This child will feel danger everywhere. While the child has to be supervised, he or she does not need the physical presence of the parent all the time. They should raise a strong child. The parent who cannot say no to a child spoils the child. This child will make unreasonable demands and put on a manipulative show. The parents have to discipline themselves in order to discipline their children. Parents who take sides in sibling rivalry encourage jealousy and hate. They should not prefer boys over girls, fair complexions over dark ones, the honor roll over an average student. Neither party can influence the other unless they communicate. Find a time and place to talk to your children. Children are sometimes in a 'bad mood' upon returning from school, loaded with homework. The best time to have a chat is during breakfast and evening dinner. During this time, the parent can inform the child of all the good things he or she did that day and ask the child the same and share his or her problems. When you do argue, do it patiently, one person speaking at a time. Be specific and separate emotion from facts. Speak in a low tone, Screaming decreases the intake of the message. Practice active listening from each other's view, even if you don't agree. Refrain from sarcasm, name calling, humiliating, pointing your finger, etc. Encourage each other even in areas of shortcoming, rather than making fun or making a negative remark, i.e., if the child brings a B- report, then instead of, "I doubt you will ever improve or pass your exam," say, "B is better than C," and "I am sure you are talented enough to do better. May I help you in the areas that you have difficulties in at school?" The purpose of giving them chores is to keep them busy as well as to teach them responsibility. Initially it may be boring but eventually will become routine. The assignment should be according to age and not the sex of the child. However, children should not be forced into doing things, or otherwise they will rebel. By the same token, they should not be penalized for mistakes. The best payment for a job is a smile, hug, thank you or praising the child in the presence of others, rather than money. While it may be all right to give an allowance, it should not be tied to the job. SETTING LIMITS IN GENDER INTERACTION In Islam intimate mixing of youth and adults of opposite sexes by themselves is not permitted for social reasons. Thus we oppose dating and all such activities. Nevertheless, there is a need for Muslim boys and girls over eighteen to get to know each other so that when they attain the age for marriage, hopefully, they will choose a Muslim spouse. This can be done in a supervised setting whether during a community function, mosque, ISNA or MYNA convention. Talking to a non-mahram for business or religious reasons is permitted in Islam. Both boys and girls, men and women, should lower their gaze, dress appropriately and talk in a business manner and not in a seductive way. The right of God is that He should be believed in, He should be worshiped and He should be obeyed. Thus, if we set limits and discipline ourselves, the reward is immense and includes not only success in this world but also in the hereafter with the pleasure of God. http://www.themodernreligion.com/misc/sex/s1.html
Do you think the show Trading Races will honestly portray race issues? My inital gut reaction is that they will show a black person "transformed" into a white person dressed nicely and he/she will not receive any "racist" reactions. In contrast, they will "transform" a white person into a black person wearing "thug attire" that gets many racist reations. Of course the clothes and attitude and class association will never be mentioned as possible causes.
Feeling Pinch, Stores Woo Lagging Shoppers. Evaluate Article? Lackluster sales in this holiday season have retailers scrambling to wring a few last dollars from procrastinators by slashing prices, extending hours and wooing customers more persistently than last year. The moves show that retailers' strategy during this final weekend before Christmas -- when about 10% of holiday sales are expected to take place -- has become increasingly reliant on the same promotions and marathon hours once unique to the "Black Friday" weekend following Thanksgiving. But the discounts also reveal the pinch stores are in this year as the credit crunch, rising gas prices and winter storms have taken a toll on companies dependent on end-of-year sales. The tough economy has left aisles more empty this year. Total foot traffic at U.S. retail outlets took an 8.9% dive during the second full week of December, compared with the same period last year, according to an estimate from ShopperTrak RCT Corp., which bases its numbers on a formula that involves an electronic count of shoppers in malls and other retail outlets nationwide. A bright spot, however, has been online, where aggressive discounting and cut-rate deals on fast shipping have contributed to a surge in spending. From Nov. 1 to Dec. 16, online shoppers spent $23.5 billion, 19% higher than the corresponding days last year, according to comScore Inc., a Reston, Va., market research firm that tracks Web spending and traffic. Videogames, consoles and accessories are the fastest-growing category, more than doubling from the comparable period last year. Furniture, appliances and equipment ranks second, up 63%, while event tickets and consumer electronics are up 29% and 24%, respectively. Now, a final push is on, both online and in stores. Web retailers continued to hunt for business by cutting shipping charges to seal deals before the pre-Christmas shipping window closes. Shoebuy.com, a Boston-based unit of IAC/InterActive Corp. offered free express shipping until today. Online handbag merchant eBags upgraded purchases made by Wednesday from standard shipping to two-day air-shipping through UPS for no extra cost. Brick-and-mortar stores, meanwhile, retooled their hours for the weekend, hoping to spark their own shopping flurry. J.C. Penney Co. stores are staying open until midnight tonight and Saturday. Select Macy's Inc. stores on the East Coast will stay open nonstop throughout the weekend -- 107 hours straight for one branch in Queens. And New York-based FAO Schwarz made discounts of 25% to 50% on certain toys. Ed Schmults, the chief executive officer at FAO Schwarz, said that while foot traffic was up, business had not been as booming throughout the season as he hoped. The National Retail Federation, a trade group, is predicting just 4% in sales growth for 2007, the smallest growth rate in five years. Britt Beemer, chairman of America's Research Group, paints an even grimmer picture: He lowered his forecast of 2% retail sales growth to 1.8%, his lowest forecast in nearly 10 years. In the apparel category, men's clothing has showed modest single-digit growth through the first 20 days of the shopping season, according to MasterCard Spending Pulse, a unit of MasterCard Advisors, which tracks spending of all types. But women's apparel -- which last year constituted three times the sales of men's -- has been a major disappointment, as shoppers have avoided big purchases. Sales were down 5.7% from the same time last year. Retailers have responded with a flurry of price cuts, but large inventory remains in some stores. One of Gap Inc.'s Old Navy stores in downtown Chicago on Wednesday had piles of festive sweaters marked down to $20 from $36.50. Women's coats still stuffed the racks, despite being already marked down 50%, and its signature "performance fleece," also half off, was stacked eight shelves high. The bad tidings for apparel have left some retailers looking for other items to push. At Banana Republic, also owned by Gap, $64 gift sets of its perfumes, body creams and shower creams were marked down 30%. Gold-boxed gift sets of a new line of bath products at Ann Taylor Stores Corp. stores were discounted to $19.50 from $29. At Limited Brands Inc.'s Victoria's Secret, stores were piled with beauty gift sets, many 40% off. Meanwhile luxury goods are expected to have a good season this year, and retail consultant Frederick Crawford of AlixPartners predicts "pockets of good news" for high-end retail. For brands like Prada and Gucci, he expects to see 5% to 7% growth. According to retail surveys, electronics sales were down 0.5% in the three-week period between Nov. 18 and Dec. 9 compared to a year ago, according to Stephen Baker, vice president of industry analysis for market watcher NPD Group. He said consumers in recent years have been delaying purchases until closer to Christmas, which may account for the slowdown. Indeed, Angela Smith has waited until the last week to make her purchases. A 39-year-old bank employee in Dallas, Ms. Smith said she is waiting for prices to drop further as well as trying to spend less. For her three nephews, ages 12, 8 and 7, she plans to buy remote-controlled cars, which Wal-Mart Stores Inc. initially priced at $59 and has since dropped to $49. "I am going to swing by this weekend and see if they are going to take it down one more time," says Ms. Smith, who was shopping for a co-worker's present at her local Wal-Mart midweek. Home-furnishings retailers, fighting the weak housing market, are being particularly aggressive with their promotions this year. At Williams-Sonoma Inc.'s Pottery Barn store on Chicago's Michigan Avenue, Christmas-tree-shaped candles were discounted 50%, and holiday garlands of fake evergreen branches were 30% off. Wrapped gifts such as silver jewelry boxes, also marked down 30%, were stacked high Wednesday afternoon. Home-improvement outfits like Lowe's Cos. Inc. and Home Depot Inc. are destined to be hardest hit, says AlixPartners' Mr. Crawford. "Consumers are absolutely showing us that they will be delaying discretionary purchases" like gear to remodel a kitchen, he said. A boom-bust pattern is typical after Thanksgiving's Black Friday discounts, which encourages a flurry of purchases early but leads to a tapering off in early December, killing shopping momentum. This year the pattern was more pronounced: A double-digit sales surge on Black Friday exceeded retailers' expectations; but come December, throngs of shoppers didn't return. There was one exception, however: online retail. Web merchants have discounted and promoted heavily this season, say industry analysts. Shipping promotions have been particularly popular. Sixty-eight percent of surveyed Web retailers said they are offering express shipping promotions this year, up from 49% last year, according to Scott Silverman, executive director of Shop.org, an online retail trade group and unit of National Retail Federation. As the boom continues, these companies are becoming increasingly creative to draw customers. This year Ice.com, a Montreal-based Internet jeweler, has rolled out new videos to promote products and free overnight shipping. It has experimented with new marketing tricks such as buying front-page ads on Microsoft Corp.'s MSN and Yahoo Inc.'s Web sites this week. Ice.com even tried to tap influencers to drive word-of-mouth among blogs, magazine mentions and celebrities.

Can anyone help me with my essay Editing? Please? Globalization shapes our identity through trade, transportation, and media. Globalization shapes our identity to the extent that we are influenced by people around us, new and old ideas and beliefs, and even the consciously held notion that we are and will continue to be influenced by globalization. Media is a powerful tool that affects and shapes everything from our buying habits to our self concept. When global patterns of trade and transportation are portrayed through the media, the effect is to solidify and intensify those patterns. First, trade ties into the shaping of globalization. This is done by international trade. There are many companies in Canada that are owned by the United States, but the products that sold by the company are made in various locations around the world. The fact that the labor is distributed worldwide means that jobs are being provided for people who otherwise would not have been able to have a job without the factory located where they live. For example, Nike products are sold in many stores and countries but are manufactured in China, Thailand, Indonesia, and Vietnam. This influences the way people in different countries dress--an aspect of globalization at work. National trade also shapes globalization. People across Canada trade with other provinces and territories for goods that they may not have in their own country. For example, Albertans trade beef and wheat with other provinces that don’t have as large a surplus as Albertans do. The food that is available to people for consumption influences what they cook, and so in part is determined by globalization. Local trade is also another aspect that ties into the shaping of globalization. Example of local trade is a farmers market, this is where people make products and sell them. Once a week there is a farmers market help and people can go and buy various products from different cultures which affects their globalization and how it shapes them. Therefore trade is one aspect of the shaping of globalization. Second, transportation helps with the connection of how globalization shapes identities. International transportation also shapes the globalizing world. Products can be shipped overseas on boats and planes to other countries. Trucks also play an important part in transportation on land. Bananas are one example of how this process works. They are shipped to places around the world in containers on planes, boats, and vehicles. This influences how the items are transported while also tying into the food part of globalization. National transportation affects how globalization shapes identities. An example would be the fruits and vegetables from British Columbia that are shipped throughout Canada by trucks. This is done because some places can`t hold the proper climate to grow them. This influences what people in certain areas eat and how often they get that certain type of food. Local transportation also affects globalization. Many people can just take their regular vehicles and sometimes big trucks to local grocery stores or markets and sell their products there. This Influences how and what people eat in their town, meaning that they can get fresh home-grown produce rather than having something that is from a large market. Thus transportation plays a role in the shaping of globalization. Lastly, the media helps with the shaping of globalization. Magazines are one aspect of this; they influence people by telling them what is popular and what is not. For example, by writing in their magazine that wearing a certain article of clothing will make one fit in with society, many people will go out of their way to dress in that particular style. Television also contributes to aspects of globalization. Cooking shows often demonstrate how to make a variety of foods from around the world; this introduces many people to food dishes that they may never have heard of otherwise. This shows that a simple cooking program can educate people about world cultures. Newspapers connect people and shape globalization. It can help people connect to what is going on in the world. For example, one can learn about wars in Afghanistan and be updated on it daily, which brings the struggles of that nation closer to home. In conclusion, the media helps in making the world seem smaller. This is the essay and what needis an concluding paragraph which i cant really think of what to write.. so far i have Globalization in the world can be defined by three aspects; media, transportation and trade. They link together and help the world become closer connected. thanks..
how does the article make distinction between firms? use these distionctions to analyze and gain insights? Abstract (Summary) Instead, Giancarlo Di Risio, Versace's bespectacled chief executive, presided over an evening that highlighted luxury goods: Parked at one end of the courtyard was a half-million-dollar Lamborghini Murcielago with a black-and-white leather interior by Versace. A huge poster showed an AgustaWestland helicopter with a Versace-designed cabin. Stacked nearby was luggage embossed with the brand's Greek motif, with pieces starting at about $4,000. The company found it increasingly tough to squeeze profits out of highly perishable fashions as production costs rose in Italy. In 1997, Mr. Versace was murdered outside his Miami villa. The firm's finances went into a tailspin, and it was forced to shelve plans to go public. Mr. Versace's 50% stake in the label went to his niece, Ms. Versace's then-preteen daughter Allegra Versace Beck, shifting the balance of power. Though Ms. Versace owns only 20% of the company, she was seen to exert huge influence because of her daughter's stake. A third sibling, Santo Versace, owns the remaining 30% of the company. Reproduced with permission of copyright owner. Further reproduction or distribution is prohibited without permission. Milan -- When Italian fashion house Gianni Versace SpA recently threw a cocktail party in the courtyard of its 16th-century palazzo to promote its latest creations, designer Donatella Versace ducked out of the soiree early, flanked by bodyguards. Instead, Giancarlo Di Risio, Versace's bespectacled chief executive, presided over an evening that highlighted luxury goods: Parked at one end of the courtyard was a half-million-dollar Lamborghini Murcielago with a black-and-white leather interior by Versace. A huge poster showed an AgustaWestland helicopter with a Versace-designed cabin. Stacked nearby was luggage embossed with the brand's Greek motif, with pieces starting at about $4,000. Mr. Di Risio is trying to shift Versace's attention away from clothes and to accessories, home interiors and other lifestyle products that will bring in new streams of revenue and offset fickle fashion cycles. "Fashion does not exist at Versace," he said, describing his strategy in an interview before the reception. The new approach is bearing fruit. Versace swung back into the black last year, posting a $25.4 million profit after years of losses, and has shaken off millions in debt. Driving that turnaround were rising sales in the lucrative accessories Mr. Di Risio is pushing. Yet the effects of the makeover have touched the core of the company's identity. Ms. Versace has begun taming the flamboyant clothing designs that once set her and the fashion house apart from the crowd. "I no longer recognize myself in that kind of woman," the 52-year-old Ms. Versace said in a telephone interview. The culture shift at Versace highlights how an increasingly competitive fashion industry is forcing even the most freewheeling players to embrace a corporate culture. Many labels, including LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton's smaller brands like Celine and Marc Jacobs, have also been toning down their looks to appeal to a wider swath of consumers. Designers who once called the shots are ceding authority to executives who run the numbers. "In the beginning, it was a shock for me," Ms. Versace said. "When you tell a person who is used to being in power -- to saying yes or no on everything -- to take a step back, it's not easy. But it was necessary." Tweaking a label's aesthetics carries risks. If pushed too far, transformations risk alienating loyal customers, says Robert Burke, head of New York-based luxury-goods consultancy Robert Burke Associates and the former fashion director at Bergdorf Goodman. "You will always want to see a fashion edge to Versace," he says. Yet for family-owned fashion labels like Versace, pressure to make more money is high. They compete with publicly traded conglomerates such as LVMH and PPR SA's Gucci Group, which have the financial heft to expand with stores in the emerging markets of China, India and Russia -- seen as fueling the industry's growth. A number of Italy's top family-owned fashion houses, including Versace, Prada SpA and Salvatore Ferragamo SpA, are considering stock- market listings in the next couple of years. "An IPO would be the best way to raise money and implant in these countries," says Peter Farren, a luxury-goods analyst at the French investment firm Bryan Garnier. At Versace, a sobering realization is spurring Mr. Di Risio's moves: The clothes that once made the brand are now struggling to make money. In its heyday in the early 1990s, Versace stayed ahead of the fashion mainstream with lavish catwalk shows that celebrated the racy designs of founder Gianni Versace. The label amassed collections of real estate and artwork that enhanced the family's jet-setter status. Ms. Versace Beck, now 20 years old, manages her stake with the help of advisers. The Versace stakeholders decided the company needed a CEO who could turn the company around. Fabio Cacciatori, at one time an outside financial consultant for the company, became CEO in September 2003 but resigned in December. The company named Versace's then-Chief Financial Officer Daniele Ballestrazzi interim CEO as it searched for new leadership. When Versace recruited Mr. Di Risio from LVMH's Fendi label in the summer of 2004, the house was saddled with more than $146 million in debt and heading to a net loss of $124 million for the year, on revenue of $416 million. High-end retailers like Bergdorf Goodman had stopped carrying the brand. Bergdorf Chief Executive Jim Gold recalls that Versace was distributing too widely, diluting its exclusivity, and was overly consumed with making a splash on the runway. While many labels had started delivering retailers fresh designs more frequently, ahead of the runway collections, Versace resisted. Mr. Di Risio arrived with a new mantra. Clothing that is too fashionable, he told his lieutenants, is bad for business because it eats up capital and goes out of style quickly. Accessories and other leather goods are a better bet because they have a longer shelf life and fatter profit margins. To reduce Versace's dependence on fashion, Mr. Di Risio shut down lines such as Versace Intimates lingerie and Versace Young, a children's line. The company sold its unprofitable perfume, jewelry and watchmaking divisions, replacing them with lucrative licensing agreements with U.S. watch group Timex Corp. and Italian perfume and cosmetics maker EuroItalia Srl. Mr. Di Risio homed in on the company's shoes and handbags, which have higher profit margins because they cost less to produce than clothes but are easier to sell to a wide array of customers. Last year, more than 30% of Versace's $383 million in revenue came from accessories, compared with 4% when Mr. Di Risio arrived. He also expanded the label's push into home furnishings -- a business that generated sales of $82.5 million in 2006, up 55% from the year before. Versace recently unveiled its "Jet Seat," an aerodynamically-styled leather chair in a high-tech ceramic frame that is sold in Europe for <euro>38,000 (about $50,000). "It was like taking a blank page and rewriting everything," Mr. Di Risio says. To succeed, however, he had to get Ms. Versace on board. She had hoped to resurrect the costly haute-couture fashion shows the label had discontinued before Mr. Di Risio's arrival. But he argued she could more effectively enhance the line's exclusivity by holding showings for individual clients. "I said to Di Risio, 'This is not going to work. This is going to die,'" recalled Ms. Versace. But, she said, "I was wrong, and he was right. We sell more now." Ms. Versace had to become more conscious of how much time and money the label invests in promoting designs at events like the Oscars. Last year, the designer dressed actresses Hilary Swank, Uma Thurman and Salma Hayek and director Robert Altman's wife, Kathryn Reed Altman, who donned a navy-blue sequin gown. This year, however, Ms. Versace limited herself to one gown, designing a rose-colored dress with a sweeping train for best-actress nominee Penelope Cruz. For Versace's ready-to-wear line, Ms. Versace is going for looks she calls "a little more understated." Bergdorf Goodman will carry her designs in the fall for the first time in years. Ms. Versace is also working more closely with retailers, adding four more collections beyond the traditional spring and fall runway collections. These are shown to retailers in private visits, giving them a preview of what to expect. On the financial side, Mr. Di Risio has untangled the company's assets from those of the family, selling property he deemed "nonstrategic" to pay the company's debts. The family's Manhattan townhouse was sold for about $35 million, and its contents went up for auction in 2005. The paintings alone -- including works by artists Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Roy Lichtenstein and Julian Schnabel -- fetched more than $11 million dollars. Flagship stores in New York, London and Milan that Mr. Di Risio described as "decadent and sad," were redone with sleek, minimalist designs. The label, which operates 82 stores and has 35 franchise operations, plans to open more than 10 boutiques by the end of the year, including seven stores in China alone. When Versace opened the doors of its updated Moscow boutique in April, an array of leather bags, belts and shoes greeted customers at the store's lacquered ground-floor entrance. The label's ready-to-wear collection was relegated to the upper floor.
Traditional marriage: rape, abuse, traded as property, women as mental defectives, polygamy, doweries? Should America have traditional marriage? Or modern, equal, loving civilized marriage? Marriage is a tradition, yet "traditional" marriage is a myth. The marriage tradition started as women being property and a commodity traded among men. *The bible shows many instances of women as property. *Raping one's wife wasn't outlawed in England until *1891*. The Times bemoaned, "One fine morning last month, marriage in England was suddenly abolished." *Under the Nepoleonic code of France and Louisianna, women were considered the same legal status as children and mental defectives. *Under English common law, women did not leagally exist and was forbidden to any personal property. Even her clothes were her husbands. So when people urge 'traditional' marriage, why don't they include *all* the traditions of western marriage like the right to rape, beat, imprison, enslave wives, refuse property ownership, refuse legal existence, consider women as incompetetants and baby factories? Quotes on "traditional" marriage: "By marriage, the husband and wife are one person in law, that is, the very being or legal existence of the woman is suspended during the marriage, or at least incorporated and consolidated into that of her husband, under whose wing, protection and cover, she performs everything." ~ William Blackstone, " Commentaries on the Laws of England", 1765 "In the nineteenth century, when a judge ruled that a husband could not imprison and rape his wife the London Times bemoaned, `One fine morning last month, marriage in England was suddenly abolished.' The phrase rule of thumb descends from English common law that said a man could legally beat his wife with a switch `no thicker than his thumb.'" ~ Naomi Wolf, "Radical Heterosexuality" "The 1804 Code Napoleon, influential throughout Europe [and Louisiana; remember Streetcar?] recapitulated the old terms of the marriage contract, proclaiming a husband head of his household and dictating the arrangement as one of male protection in return for female obedience. Under this code women were classified with children and mental defectives as legal incompetents." ~ Jaclyn Geller, "The Marriage Mystique" Rachel. Yes. As long as it's non-traditional. And we honeymoon in Europe. Sure. We have to do Paris and Italy, too, though. And if we skimp on the wedding, Spain?
I am looking for a site? I am looking for a site where it's kind of like myspace, but you have animated people, you can collect money and trade with your friends and buy clothes and stuff like that. One of my friends showed me this quite a long time ago ,and now I don't remember what it was called.. If anyone can help me I would really appreciate it.
Economics - Compartive Advantage? Can someone help me with this homework problem. Ive done it, but I'm just not sure If I am right. Here we go. Each country has 4 million labor hours available per week that they can use to produce wheat, clothing, or a combination of both. The table below shows the amount of wheat or clothing that can be produced using one hour of labor. Brooklyn(WHEAT) = 4 Brooklyn(C)=5 England(W)=6 England(C)=3 Initially, before these countries begin trading goods, Bertland uses 1 million hours of labor per week to produce clothing and 3 million hours per week to produce wheat, while Ernamia uses 3 million hours of labor per week to produce clothing and 1 million hours per week to produce wheat. Assume there are no other countries willing to trade goods, so when there is no trade between these two countries, each country consumes the amount of wheat and clothing it produces. Who has compartive advantage in each category? MY AnsweR: Brooklyn = C, England = W

I didn't post any links like from debunking 911 myths because they are not credible. Various websites like the ones above have torn these supposed debunks to shreds. Burkas VS the Dutch... aka...What is wrong with the Dutch? The Dutch are up to it again!!! The first to operate a money making slave trade (Dutch Indian Ocean slave trade), and introduce racism into some remote parts of Africa (like, for example, in Rwanda, where they seperated the local black population into two catagories based upon physical appereance, and allowed these sides to kill each other in the 1990's to present), are seeking 'all white all right' political policies to obtain "constitutional guarantee against religious discrimination."(http://www.cbc.ca/world/story/2006/11/17/burqa-ban.html). As the Dutch government's Immigration Minister Rita Verdonk stated, "The Cabinet finds it undesirable that face-covering clothing — including the burka — is worn in public places, for reasons of public order, security and protection of citizens" Ok. But are you not a so called 'democratic' country- with freedoms of religions? You show this by BANNING burkas- someones peaceful religious practices?
Econimics stuff help!!!? Consider two neighboring island countries called Bertland and Ernamia. Each has 4 million labour hours available per week that it can use to produce wheat, clothing, or a combination of both. The table below shows the amount of wheat or clothing that can be produced using 1 hour of labour. Wheat Clothing Bertland4 5 Ernamia 6 3 Initially, before these countries began trading goods, Bertland used 1 million hours of labour per week to produce clothing and 3 million hours per week to produce wheat, while Ernamia used 3 million hours of labour per week to produce clothing and 1 million hours per week to produce wheat. 4.6. _____ had a comparative advantage in the production of wheat and _____ had a comparative advantage in the production of clothing. Here is a better idea of the raw data... Bertland Laborer's makes 4 bushels of wheat in a hour and 5 garments of clothing in one hour of work. Ernamia laborer's make 6 bushels of what in a hour and 3 garments of clothes in a hour. Bertland used 1 million hours of labour per week to produce clothing and 3 million hours per week to produce wheat, while Ernamia used 3 million hours of labour per week to produce clothing and 1 million hours per week to produce wheat. Who has the comparative advantage...
Has anyone ever expirenced this too? On yet another brisk day in cold, cold Canada, with the polar bears drinking their Coca-Cola and the whalers waving me a happy hello as I walked down the iceway to school, I felt a sense of bliss and happiness that can only come from being an innocent eight-year-old boy. Being a very precocious child, I deeply enjoyed school, and was always eager to get extra work that the other children didn't (a practice largely contributing to my massive unpopularity for the first sixteen years of my life). My school was a small, very old building in Sydney, Nova Scotia; it would later be torn down to make way for prefabricated houses. I happily sat through my classes that morning, my third grade teacher talking with me listening attentively and laughing at her jokes, while others poked fingers, pencils, and other various objects into various orifices and threw various scoopings therefrom. After we started to talk about the ever-so-complex matter of plurality involving words ending with the letter X, I grew bored and took a bathroom break; I felt a little like I had to deposit a brown Twinkie. I waddled off to the bathroom, as I was a pudgy, round little kid (attributing yet more to my gross unpopularity). Upon arriving, I sat my rump down upon the cold porcelain -- remember the polar bears -- and grunted my damnedest. I had not yet realized the way of Poodhism: only when you are at peace with yourself and with the toilet will the negative energy flow out of you. As a consequence, anyone entering the bathroom heard the odd, painful-sounding gruntings of a fat midget on the can. I pushed and pushed like the Little Train That Could, except my anus was clearly his derailed brother, the Little Train That Couldn't. I resigned myself to standing up, wiping off just in case I'd shot out some raisins without my knowledge, and returning to the classroom. I really didn't like being questioned or confronted by teachers, because I always felt that the vegetative morons in the class (who could murder in front of you your sister, the teacher, and the Governor General, and walk away with no more than a wrist slap) deserved much more of the teacher's scoldings than I did. As a result, whenever confronted, I would respond somewhat sarcastically and harshly. "What took so long in the bathroom?" my kind-but-inconsiderate teacher demanded in front of the class. "My digestion," I snappily replied. I was met with a scowl and a "sit down" accompanied by a plethora of comments from my ‘peers': "Oooh, dee-jess-shun!" "Nerd!" "Weiner!" "Cornelius!" (One really odd kid got kicks out of calling me "Cornelius"; to this day, I don't know why.) The bell rang and I happily skipped out to the negative two-hundred-and-sixty-two schoolyard. I played, desperately trying to avoid succumbing to the harsh, brutal Canadian elements. And I downed a sandwich of leafy vegetables and mayonnaise, as I really just didn't like meat at the time. (My lunch is relevant to my story, of course, because the sheer amount of fiber and near total lack of iron in my diet led to some pretty serious powershitting; I pinched loaves regularly three to five times daily. On this day, I hadn't. And this was odd -- very odd.) We filed back into class upon the sounding of the ice-bell (basically the foghorn from a hockey game). We promptly sat down in our seats and prepared to continue our stimulating discussion on the letter X. It was around this time I felt pockets of gas and other nether-beings moving around down under -- like an Australian rebellion gone hostile, the southern inhabitants were attempting a bloody coup on my brown bastion. "Hey, no problem," I thought to myself. After all, it was after lunch -- there was very little of the school day left, and I knew I could hold it until I could leave. I knew it, that is, until the proletariat poop in my southern realms, too long held prisoner by the abysmal treatment of my despotic colon, launched one more salvo on the bay doors, and I could feel sheer knife-like pains shooting all through my lower body. This was going to be a horrific shit -- the kind of shit about which documentaries are made. Realizing that I could hold it no longer, I raised my hand deftly into the air, waving somewhat urgently. "Yes, Matthew?" the teacher enquired. "May I go to the bathroom?" I gruntingly replied. "No. You went before lunch, and you had the entire lunch hour to go. So you stay here until we're done." The horror! I knew my doom was approaching. Choosing not to plead with the teacher, I instead decided to consult with the general minding the rebellion, which had now pushed well beyond the poop factory district and was pressing down the Hershey highway with the vigor of a mob only accurately depicted in the works of Mary Shelley. The general advised me that we should form a line; and so I clenched my butt cheeks so hard I swear I split atoms. Like a row of riot police smashing batons down on filthy unwashed hippies, my ass cheeks faithfully guarded my grey sweatpants from the attackers pressing to put an end to free trade, critical thought, and clean clothing -- assailants wishing to put the last cherry on the cake sealing my unpopularity into the stones of time, ensuring I would be dateless and fat until I was sixty-two. My regard in the public eye was already all but demolished, as the previous week I had shown up to school in a Power Rangers costume, sure that no one would recognize me and that I would somehow have mystical Kung-Fu powers that would allow me to eradicate my oppressors. I had been mistaken. The pressure grew to a point at which I was sure I would implode. My face was red and I was sweating and grunting loudly, occasionally letting out the odd, sharp-sounding, painfully hot fart. The kids around me knew the end was near and moved away like Englishmen avoiding plague-bearers. I waved my hand frantically to the teacher to allow me release; she denied me yet again. And there I sat in a conundrum: not wanting to defy my teacher, but not wanting to destroy my life. I was at the pivotal crossroads at which every small child should stand at one point in his or her life: should I disobey the teacher and run to the bathroom, or should I utterly shit myself in front of my peers? What happened next is terrible. When most people lose control of their bowels, a small lump of matter forces its way out of the anus, and out some more, until eventually you've soiled yourself. But I guess I'm not most people. While I was pondering the nature of defiance verses self-discipline in a heavily introspective debate, I lost control of the forces; and a deadly explosion finished off the rest of my riot police, leaving their scattered remains all about. I had lost control. A terrific and awe-inspiring CRACK of a fart escaped my anus, fueled by the sheer power of one-hundred percent refined green mucky diarrhea. The noise of the farting was a million times amplified by the hard wooden seat against which my ass was situated. A torrent of green muck escaped me. I sat awestruck, not knowing what to do with myself. The torrent continued until the crap had literally gone down my leg and was now burning my skin with its acidic glop. Eventually my shoes filled with shit, a fact I never let on -- I don't know why shit in my shoes was more embarrassing than shit in my pants, but it was. As I stood up, tears rolled down my young face. The back of my pants were absolutely saturated in sheer, vile feces. I walked to the bathroom, my shoes making the noises of rubber boots filled with water, splat-splat-splatting along the floor. I plunked myself into a stall and wept. I ended up inspiring pity in the mother of one of my fellow students, an employee at the school. She gave me an extra pair of pants. I packed the glob of shit-soaked filth into my backpack and left. I just left. Thus began the most repulsive walk home I have ever endured.
The "Day without immigrants". How can you help America? WASHINGTON (AFP) Immigrants' rights advocates, elated by the resounding success of Monday's "National Day of Action," which drew the backing of hundreds of thousands of protesters across the United States, now are planning a national boycott which they hope will have an even greater resonance. Organizers are planning the May 1 "Great American Boycott," urging illegal immigrants -- who cannot vote and who have only limited political power -- to flex their economic muscle. Protesters are being urged to refrain from shopping, and to stay away from school and work. You should take a moment to let that sink in. This is a movement orchestrated by people who entered the US illegally, and then want to scream about their "rights." WHAT RIGHTS? YOU DON'T EVEN BELONG HERE! Let's take a look at some of the many benefits that illegal aliens have blessed our great country with: Street gangs, graffiti, drugs, skyrocketing healthcare, depreciation of property value, illiteracy. The list could go on. What they actually have to offer (cheap labor) pales when compared with what they have given our country to deal with in terms of problems. I'll take expensive vegetables over expensive healthcare any day! And now, like terrorists, they are going to attack our economy -- the one entity that makes our nation stand out from all the others. The backbone of our nation. The country they came to like locusts so they could reap the benefits is now the focus of their boycott. You've seen it on TV: Marching on our American streets waving their Mexican flags, boldly showing that they can be more racist than those whom they accuse of racism, and yet the obvious (to most of us) is totally not obvious to them... IF YOU'VE GOT IT SO BAD HERE, THEN LEAVE!!! To all the real Americans, you can do one small thing on May 1st, 2006. It won't be racist, nor will it be violent. It will not be boastful, arrogant, selfish, nor distasteful. It will not be any of those things that our "guests" have already displayed. What it will do is nullify a movement. All you have to do is buy something on May 1st. Make up for what they will try to take away. It doesn't have to be a new car or house (unless you were already planning on getting one). It simply needs to be a day of trading. Hold off grocery buying until May 1st. Take your wife out to eat that night. Get the kids pizza, hamburgers, whatever! Make several trips to the convenience store. Buy your meals at work. Fill up your tank. Shop for clothes, furniture, outdoor equipment. If it needs to be bought, BUY IT MAY 1st! Those are just a few suggestions. We're not asking you to spend your inheritance that day, but just to spend more than you normally would. Even if it's only a few dollars, this will help soften the blow that the Mexicans will try to inflict on our economy that day. It sounds trivial at first, but if this idea gets around, what the Mexicans set out to do will fail. I did not write this. I am merely passing it on. And to answer cisco: My great grandparents came here on a boat straight from Italy. They registered, took citizenship classes, learned some of the language, and became productive tax paying citizens of this great country. So no, I am not singling out Mexicans and I have no sympathy for anyone who believes themselves above our laws.
What do you think should I wear to college? I'm a 16yr old girl and I'm starting college (the UK kind of college, not university, lol) in September, and I will NO LONGER have to wear a school uniform! Yay! But that leaves me with the all important question: wtf am I gonna wear?! I'm going to study english, art and law- but mainly art, cos it's my passion. I'm 5"4 and a UK size 10/12, with an hourglass figure, fair skin and dark brown hair. I'm not really in any kind of group, but I'm always going to emo, goth, electro and rock shows with my girls. I'm into alternative type stuff and I'm against unfair trading and commercial culture, which is why (this is important) I WON'T BUY ANY NEW HIGH STREET CLOTHING, only second hand stuff, vintage, handmade or fair trade/organic stuff. I like looking pretty and girly, but hot. I know this sounds kind of weird but I'm not sure what kinds of thing I should wear to express my personality in an everyday way, without looking completely crap ;) Any ideas?
Our Women and Our Youth are Being Destroyed anyone agree ? Such a sad sad world we live in. Poor kids today have zero role models. 99% of Hollywood is trashed up druggies with 4 different men and 6 kids. Kids today have nothing but violent cartoons to watch, no one goes outside anymore it seems to throw a damn football, their all fat and lazy playing playstation on the couch which is why we have an obesity edpidemic in our youth. Women on the other hand watch crappy shows like Desperate Housewives, and think "this is the way to be", NOT ALL WOMEN, But some for sure, don't deny this. Kids are under so much peer pressure at school to compete for who has the better sneakers, hair, ipod, house, cars, clothes especially, shoes, etc. So sad. How about all these crimes agains kids, these scumbags should be castrated and thrown to the sharks. Gosh, when I look back at my younger years, I wouldn't trade it for the world. Would YOU?

The Beginning of the Call? Just save it ? read it ? The Beginning of the Call -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This chapter will present a brief account of the life of the Messenger of Allah (Allah's blessings and peace be upon him and the people of his household) from the time of his call until his migration to Medina. It will indicate the time when he was commanded to fight, and will present some of the signs and miracles which were wrought at his hands during that period. It consists of eight sections. The Beginning Of His Call 'Ali ibn Ibrahim [al-Qummi, who is one of our most respected traditionists, related that when the Prophet was thirty-seven years of age, a person used to come to him in his dreams, addressing him and saying: "O Apostle of Allah ! ", but he used to ignore this. After a long time had passed, and as he was among the hills grazing the sheep of his uncle Abu Talib, he saw and heard a person addressing him: "O Messenger of Allah ! " He asked: "Who are you?" "I am Gabriel", the person answered; "Allah has sent me to you so that He may take you for a messenger." The Messenger of Allah told Khadijah of what happened. Khadijah had already been informed of the accounts of the Jews and Bahira', and what Muhammad's mother Aminah had also recounted. Thus, she answered: "O Muhammad, I do hope that it is true!" The Prophet used to hide all this, until one day Gabriel came to him with heavenly water and said: "O Muhammad, rise and perform your ablutions for prayers! " Gabriel taught him the ablutions - washing the face and the two hands from the elbows down, rubbing the head and the two feet to the two heels. He also taught him prostration (sujud) and kneeling (ruku'). When the Prophet attained his fortieth year, Gabriel commanded him to perform the prayers and taught him their rites, except their prescribed times. The Messenger of Allah used to pray two rak`ahs every time he prayed. 'Ali ibn Abi Talib was very much attached to the Prophet, accompanying him wherever he went. One day he saw him praying. He asked: "O Abu 'l-Qasim, what is this that you are doing?" The Prophet answered: "It is the prayer which Allah commanded me to perform." He then called 'Ali to Islam; he accepted, and used to pray with him. Khadijah also entered into Islam. Thus at that time only the Messenger of Allah, 'Ali and Khadijah used to pray. After a few days, Abu Talib came in to see the Messenger of Allah, accompanied by Ja'far (the Prophet's cousin). He saw the Prophet and `Ali standing beside him in prayer. Abu Talib said to Ja'far, "Stand by the side of your cousin." As he stood at the other side of the Prophet, the Messenger of Allah stepped forward and stood in front of the two men (as prayer leader). Seeing them, Abu Talib recited the following verses: In truth, Ali and Ja`far are my trust, In times of hardship and sorrow. By Allah, I shall never abandon the Prophet, Nor would any of my sons of high birth abandon him - Do not abandon, but rather support your cousin, The son of my brother from my mother as well as my father. Al-Qummi related further that the Prophet used to trade for Khadijah before he married her. When he was working for her, she sent him with a caravan belonging to the people of Quraysh to Syria. He was accompanied by a servant of hers called Maysarah. They encamped one day beneath a hermitage belonging to one of the monks living in the area. The monk came down from his cell and looked intently at the Messenger of Allah. He then asked: "Who is this man?" The people answered: "He is the son of `Abdu'l-Muttalib." The monk retorted: "His father could not be alive." Then looking at his eyes and between his shoulders, he exclaimed: "This is the Prophet of the people! This is the Prophet sent with the sword!" When Maysarah returned, he told Khadijah what happened and what had convinced her to offer herself to the Prophet in marriage. Khadijah gained a thousand dinars from that caravan. One day the Prophet went into a market of the Arabs where he saw Zayd [ibn al-Harithah]. Zayd was a smart youth; the Prophet thus bought him for Khadijah. When, however, the Prophet married her, she gave him Zayd as a gift. When the Messenger of Allah received the call to Prophethood, and 'Ali accepted Islam, Zayd also became a Muslim after him. Thus `Ali, Ja'far, Zayd and Khadijah used to pray behind the Messenger of Allah. Ash-Shaykh Abu Bakr Ahmad ibn al-Hasan al-Bayhaqi reported in his book Dala'ilu'n-Nubuwwah on the authority of `Ali, who said: "We were with the Messenger of Allah in Mecca when he went out into its suburbs. He did not pass by a tree or mountain but that it met him with the greeting `Peace be upon you O Apostle of Allah.' " [31] It is reported that 'Ali said: "I remember when I used to go with the Prophet into the valley, how he did not pass by a stone or tree but that it exclaimed, `Peace be upon you O Apostle of Allah', while I stood and listened." A man called `Afif [al-Kindi] related that, "I was a merchant; I came to Mina one day during the hajj (pilgrimage) season. al-`Abbas ibn `Abdi'l-Muttalib was also a merchant. I therefore came to trade with him.. As we were thus occupied, a man came out of a tent to pray: He faced the Ka'bah, and soon a woman came out and likewise stood in prayer. A youth also came out to pray with them. I exclaimed, `O `Abbas, what is this religion? We do not know what this religion is.' He answered, `This is Muhammad ibn `Abdillah, who claims that Allah called him to be a messenger, and that the treasures of Kisra (Khusraw, the Sasanid Persian Emperor) and Qaysar (Caesar, the Byzantine Emperor) will be opened for him. This is his wife Khadijah, daughter of Khuwaylid, who has believed in him. The youth is his cousin 'Ali ibn Abi Talib, who also believed in him.' " `Afif then concluded: "Would that I had believed in him on that day so that I would have been the second man to follow him." Ibn Ishaq reported that when the Prophet came out of the tent he looked at the sky, and when he saw the sun had inclined, he rose up to pray. Ibn Ishaq also mentioned Khadijah's standing in prayer behind him. It is related on the authority of Mujahid ibn Jabr ( a well-known Qur'an interpreter and traditionist), who said: "Among the favors which Allah bestowed upon 'Ali ibn Abi Talib and the great good He willed for him, was this: The people of Quraysh suffered a great shortage of food. Abu Talib had many children. Thus the Messenger of Allah said one day to his uncle `Abbas, who was one of the wealthiest men among the sons of Hashim, `O `Abbas, your brother Abu Talib is a man with many children, and you can see for yourself how people are suffering as a result of this crisis. Come let us go and relieve him and his children.' They thus went to him and discussed the matter. He answered: `Leave `Aqil (a brother of 'Ali) .and take whomever you wish.' The Messenger of Allah took . 'Ali into his home, and `Ali remained with the Messenger of Allah until Allah called him to be a prophet. `Ali then followed him, believed in him and assented to him." 'Ali ibn Ibrahim [al-Qummi] related that three years after this, Allah revealed to the Apostle of Allah: Declare openly what you have been commanded and be not concerned with the Associators [Quran S : 94] . The Messenger of Allah therefore went out, stood up at al-Hijr [that space which encompasses the Ka'bah on the north] and proclaimed: "O people of Quraysh and you Arab people, I call you all to the worship of Allah alone, and call you to reject all partners with Him, and all idols. I call you all to bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that I am the Messenger of Allah. Heed my call that you may through it have dominion over all the Arabs. Through it also would non-Arabs submit to your authority. Through it you would be kings in Paradise." But they mocked and laughed at him, exclaiming: "Muhammad son of `Abdullah has gone mad!" They caused him much hurt with their tongues. Abu Talib asked: "O son of my brother, what is this?" He answered: "Uncle, this is Allah's religion which He chose for His angels and prophets. It is the religion of Abraham and the prophets after him. Allah has sent me also as a messenger to humankind." Abu Talib said: "O son of my brother, surely your people will not accept this from you! Desist, therefore, from proclaiming it to them." "I shall not do so", the Prophet answered, "because Allah has commanded me to call (people to Islam)." Thus, Abu Talib left him alone. The Messenger of Allah intensified his effort in calling the people and warning them at all times. Those among the People of the Book who heard the news accepted Islam. When, however, the people of Quraysh saw people entering Islam, they were alarmed. They thus went to Abu Talib and demanded: "Restrain your nephew from us, for he has declared our mind to be foolish, and has insulted our gods! He has corrupted our youths, and has dissolved our unity!" Abu Talib then called him and said: "O my brother's son, the people have come to me asking that you desist from insulting their gods." The Prophet answered: "O uncle, I cannot disobey the command of my Lord." Thus he used to call them and warn them of the impending divine punishment. The people of Quraysh gathered in assembly and enquired: "To what does Muhammad call us?" He answered: "I call you to bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and to reject all associates with Him." They protested: "Shall we then abandon three hundred and sixty gods and worship only one God?" Thus Allah mentions in the Qur'an their saying: They marvel that a warner from among them came to them, and the rejecters of faith said, "He is a magician, a liar. Does he wish to render all gods one? This, indeed is a strange thing". . ., and so on to His saying, No! But they have not yet tasted the torment [Qur'an 38: 4 - 8] . The people then came together to Abu Talib and said: "O Abu Talib, if poverty is the cause of your nephew's action, then we will gather so much wealth for him that he would be the wealthiest man of Quraysh." Abu Talib called him and informed him of their offer. The Messenger of Allah, however, said: "Uncle, I have no need of wealth! Heed my call, so that you may be kings in this world and in the world to come! Then will both Arabs and non-Arabs submit to your authority." They dispersed, but soon returned to Abu Talib and said: "O Abu Talib, you are one of our foremost notables! You see that your nephew has declared us to be of foolish mind. He has cursed our gods and dissolve our unity! Let us give you `Umarah ibn al-Walid, the most handsome and bright youth of Quraysh, the freshest youth and the noblest of lineage to be your son - on condition that you turn over Muhammad to us that we may kill him." He answered: "You have not dealt justly with me! Would you give me your son that I may bring him up, and yet take my son to kill him?" Finally, despairing of convincing him, they desisted. Al-Hafiz (al-Bayhaqi) related in his book Dala'ilu'n-Nubuwwah on the authority of Ibrahim ibn Muhammad ibn Talhah, that Talhah ibn `Ubaydillah said: "I was present one day at the market of Busra, where I heard a monk who lived in a cell say: `Enquire of the people of this fair if there is anyone among them of the people of the Sanctuary (that is, Mecca).' I replied: `Yes, I am.' He asked: `Has Ahmad come forth yet?' `Who is Ahmad?' I asked. He replied: `The son of `Abdullah ibn `Abdi 'l-Muttalib. This is the month in which he should come forth. He is the last of the prophets. The place of his appearance is the Sanctuary, and that of his migration is a place of date-palms and black stones (that is, Medina). Beware lest anyone accept him before you do.' " Talhah continued: "I kept what he said in my heart, and .hastened to Mecca. I enquired if anything unusual had happened, and was told that, 'Muhammad ibn `Abdillah al-Amin has declared himself a prophet. Ibn Abi Quhafah (that is, Abu Bakr) has followed him.' I thus went to Abu Bakr and said: `Have you really become a follower of this man?' `Yes', he answered. `You too go to him and follow him, for he invites men to the truth.' " Talhah then told Abu Bakr what the monk had said. Abu. Bakr took Talhah to the Apostle of Allah, whereupon Talhah became a Muslim. He told the Messenger of Allah what the monk had said, which gladdened the Apostle of Allah. [32] When both Abu Bakr and Talhah had accepted Islam, a man called Nawfal ibn Khuwaylid ibn al-`Adawiyyah took them and tied them together with one rope. The people of Taym (the tribe to which Abu Bakr belonged) did not protect them. Nawfal ibn Khuwaylid was known as the harshest man of the Quraysh. The Quraysh Admit The Miraculous Qualities Of The Qur'an The Messenger of Allah never ceased to insult the gods of the Associators, nor did he cease reciting the Qur'an to them. But they used to say: "This is only the poetry of Muhammad." Some of them also said: "It is rather oratory discourse." There was an old man called al-Walid ibn al-Mughirah who was a judge among the Arabs, whom they brought difficult cases. They likewise used to recite their poems to him in order that he might judge among them. Whatever he judged to be good, that was chosen by all. He had many sons, who never left Mecca. He also possessed ten slaves, every one of whom had one thousand dinars to use as capital in trade. At that time he alone owned a qintar, [the skin of a bull filled with gold]. al-Walid was one of those who mocked the Messenger of Allah and he was the uncle of Abu Jahl ibn Hisham. The people went to al-Walid and asked: "O Abu `Abd ash-Shams, what is this which Muhammad is uttering? Is it magic, soothsaying, or oratory?" He replied: "Let me hear his words." He thus came to the Messenger of Allah while he was sitting in the Ka'bah and said: "O Muhammad, recite for me some of your poetry! " He answered: "It is not poetry, but rather the word of Allah, with which He sent His prophets and apostles." al-Walid insisted: "Recite some of it to me." The Messenger of Allah then recited: "In the name of Allah, the All-merciful, the Compassionate. " When al-Walid heard the name ar-Rahman (the All-merciful), he mockingly said: "Do you call us to follow a man of Yamamah who is called ar-Rahman?" The Prophet answered: "No, rather I call men to Allah, Who is the All-merciful, the Compassionate." He then recited the beginning of "Ha mim: as-Sajdah ", (Surah 41) until he reached verse (13) But if they turn back, say: "I have warned you of a great catastrophe like the catastrophe of Ad and Thamud. " When al-Walid heard this, he trembled and every hair on his head and in his beard stood on end. He then rose and went to his home, and did not return to the people of Quraysh. The people said to Abu Jahl, "O Abu 'l-Hakam, (that is, al-Walid) has abandoned his religion for the religion of Muhammad! Do you not see that he has not returned to us? He must have, therefore, accepted his claim and gone to his home." The people of Quraysh became exceedingly saddened by this. Abu Jahl went to al-Walid the next day and said: "O uncle, you have brought low our heads and disgraced us!" He answered: "How have I done that, O son of my brother?" "Have you turned to the religion of Muhammad?" he asked. "No", answered al-Walid, "I did not do so. Rather, I stand by the religion of my people and my forefathers. I have, however, heard great words which cause skins to shudder." Abu Jahl asked: "Is it poetry?" "No, it is not poetry", answered his uncle. Abu Jahl asked further: "Is it oratory discourse?" al-Walid answered: "No, for oratory discourse is of connected rhymed prose; yet this is free prose whose different parts do not resemble one another. It is possessed of great beauty." Abu Jahl insisted: "So it is oratory." "No", answered his uncle. Abu Jahl asked: "What is it then?" al-Walid said: "Let me think about it for a while." The next day, the people asked al-Walid: "O Abu `Abd ash-Shams, what do you say?" He answered: "Say it is magic, for it has truly attracted the hearts of the people." Thus, Allah sent down concerning him in the Qur'an - Leave me to deal with him whom I have alone created, and whom I have granted great wealth and sons, constantly present with him . . . and so on to Allah's saying: Over it (that is, Hell) stand nineteen (angels) [Qur.74:11-30]. In a tradition related by Hammad ibn Zayd on the authority of `Ikrimah (a slave and pupil of Ibn `Abb5s and a well-known traditionist), he reported that al-Walid ibn al-Mughirah came to the Messenger of Allah and asked him to recite some verses of the Qur'an. He recited: "Allah surely commands justice and doing good, and giving (of one's wealth) to near relatives. He likewise forbids lewdness, indecency and insolence. He thus admonishes you, that perhaps you may remember" [Qur'an. 16:90] . al-Walid said: "Recite the verse once more!" He did, and al-Walid exclaimed: "By Allah, it indeed is possessed of great sweetness and adorned with great beauty. Its top is indeed fruitful, and its bottom is like a palm-tree laden with fruits! Nor can any mortal utter such speech." How Allah Protected Muhammad Against The Mockers It is related that those who mocked the Messenger of Allah were five: al-Walid ibn al-Mughirah, al-`As ibn Wail as-Sahmi, al-Aswad ibn al-Muttalib, who was also known as Abu Zama'ah, al-Aswad ibn `Abd Yaghuth of the tribe of Zuhrah and al-Harith ibn at-Tulatilah al-Khuza`i. It is said that al-Walid ibn al-Mughirah passed one day by the Messenger of Allah, while the angel Gabriel was with him. Gabriel addressed the Prophet, saying: "Here comes al-Walid ibn al-Mughirah, who is one of the mockers." "Yes", he answered. Then al-Walid passed by a man of the tribe of Khuza'ah, sharpening his arrows at the door of the mosque. He accidentally stepped on some of them, a silver went into the bottom of his foot, and blood gushed out. Gabriel pointed to that spot, and blood continued to flow until it stained the bed of his daughter. Frightened, the girl cried out: "O maid, the mouth of the water skin has come untied! " "This is not the water of the water skin", said al-Walid, "it is the blood of your father. Call together for me my sons and the sons of my brother, for I am about to die." When they all gathered, he made his will, and immediately breathed his last. Al-Aswad ibn al-Muttalib passed one day by the Messenger of Allah. Gabriel pointed to his eyes and he became blind, and soon after died. al-Aswad ibn `Abd Yaghuth also passed by the Prophet one day; Gabriel pointed to his stomach, and he drank so much water that his belly swelled until it burst. al-`As ibn Wail passed also by the Prophet, and Gabriel pointed to his foot. Soon a splinter went into the bottom of his foot and came out of the top. His foot swelled up, and soon he died. at-Tulatilah passed by the Prophet, and Gabriel spat in his face. The man then went out into the Tihamah mountains (in the vicinity of Mecca), where he was hit by a burning sand storm. He was burnt and turned black. When he returned home. his family would not let him in, saying, "You are not of this family." He went away and was afflicted with great thirst. He thus drank until his stomach burst, and he died. All this happened in fulfilment of Allah's saying: We have surely protected you against the mockers [Qur'an. 15:95]. The Migration To Abyssinia And An-Naiashi's Assent To Muhammad's Prophethood When the people of Quraysh intensified their harsh treatment of the Messenger of Allah and his Companions, he ordered some of his Companions to migrate to Abyssinia. He delegated Ja'far son of Abu Talib to take charge of them, and he set out with seventy men until they took to sea. When the people of Quraysh knew of their departure, they sent `Amr ibn al-`As as-Sahmi and `Umarah ibn al-Walid to an-Najashi (Negus) .of Abyssinia, requesting him to return the men to the people of Quraysh. They were also instructed to tell the King that these men had gone against the wishes and traditions of their people. `Umarah was a handsome and wealthy man. `Amr ibn al`As set out with his wife. When they boarded the ship, they became intoxicated with wine. `Umarah then said to `Amr ibn al-`As : "Tell your wife to kiss me!" The latter answered: "Glorified be Allah! Is this possible?" `Umarah waited until `Amr got drunk, then he pushed him overboard. `Amr was on the edge of the ship; thus he held on to the edge, and people rushed to his rescue. When `Amr saw what `Umarah had done to him, he said to his wife, "Kiss him! ", which she did. When they reached Abyssinia, they went straight to an-Najashi bearing presents for him. `Amr addressed him saying: "O King, these people have gone against our religion and sought refuge with you. Return them, therefore, to us! " The King sent for Ja'far and said to him: "These men are requesting that I return you all to them." He answered: "O King, ask them, are we their slaves?" "No", answered `Amr, "rather they are free and noble men." "Ask them," Ja'far continued, "do we then owe them debts which they have come to claim from us?" `Amr answered: "They owe us no debts which we have come to claim." Ja'far continued: "Have they come then to avenge any blood of theirs that we had wrongfully shed?" `Amr answered: "They have shed no blood for which we come to exact vengeance or blood money." Ja'far asked: "What then do you want from us?" `Amr said: "They have opposed us in our religion and the religion of our forefathers and insulted our gods. They have corrupted our youths and spread dissension among us. Return them to us, therefore, that our unity might be restored." Ja'far then addressed the King saying: "O King, we have opposed them in order to follow a prophet whom Allah has raised among us. He commands us to repudiate equals to Allah, and that we abandon chance games by means of arrows. He enjoins prayers and almsgiving upon us. He has prohibited wrongdoing, oppression and the unlawful shedding of blood. He has prohibited adultery, usury, and eating the flesh of dead animals which have not been properly slaughtered, as well as eating blood. He has enjoined decency and good works upon us, and that we show kindness to near relatives. He forbids grave immorality, indecency and insolence." The King said: "It is with such (teachings) that Allah also sent Jesus son of Mary! " Then addressing Ja`far, he continued: "Do you know by heart any of the revelations which Allah sent down to your prophet?" "Yes", he answered. "Recite then! " the King demanded. Ja'far recited the Surah of Maryam (Surah 19). When he reached the words - Shake down towards you the branch of the palm-tree, and it shall drop down before you ripened dates ready to be picked. Eat and drink, therefore, and be of good cheer [Qur'an. 19 : 25 - 26 ] - an-Najashi wept and exclaimed: "By Allah this is the truth!" `Amr protested: "O King, this man has abandoned our religion; give him to us that we may take him back to our country! " an-Najashi lifted his hand and slapped him saying: "If you utter any evil against him, I will kill you!" `Amr finally said: "O King, if this is what you say, then we shall not interfere with him." A young maid stood by an-Najashi keeping flies away from him. She kept her eyes on `Umarah ibn al-Walid, as he was a handsome young man. When they went to their lodgings, `Amr said to him: "Why do you not send a message to the King's maid?" `Umarah sent a message to her, and she answered him. `Amr said: "Tell her to bring you with her some of the King's perfumes. She did so, and `Amr ibn al`As took the perfume. He had kept in his heart what `Umarah had done to him when he attempted to throw him overboard. Thus, he took the perfume and went to an-Najashi, and said to him: "O King, it is fitting that we take cognition of the King's honour and magnanimity toward us, and that we do not betray him in his own realm. Yet, my companion who is with me has sent messages to your maid and tempted her. She even brought him some of your perfumes." He then showed the King the perfume. an-Najashi was exceedingly angry and was about to kill `Umarah. But he changed his mind and said: "It is not right that I kill him, for they entered our realm under a pledge of protection." He thus called his magicians and said to them: "Do something to him that would be worse than death! " They took him and injected mercury into his generative organ. He lost his mind, so that he lived with the wild beasts and shunned human company. [33] The people of Quraysh sent men to bring `Umarah back home. The men lay in wait for him until he came with wild beasts to drink at a spring. Thus they caught him, but he continued to struggle and scream in their hands until he expired. `Amr, however, returned to the people of Quraysh and recounted to them his story. As for Ja'far, he remained in Abyssinia enjoying the best of hospitality and honour. He remained there until he heard that the Messenger of Allah had established a truce with the people of Quraysh and that peace had prevailed between them and the Muslims. He then returned with a large company of people. He arrived to find that the Messenger of Allah had conquered Khaybar (a Jewish settlement near Medina). A son was born to Ja'far by Asma', daughter of `Umays. an-Najashi also had a son, whom he called Muhammad. Asma' gave an-Najashi's son of her own milk to drink (thus making him a nursing brother of her own son). Abu Talib recited these verses urging an-Najashi to support the Prophet and his followers: Know, O King of the Ethiopians, that Muhammad is a prophet like Moses and Jesus son of Mary. He came with guidance such as they brought, for each of them was by Allah's command well -protected. Concerning him, you recite verses in your own scriptures; a true account it is, not a fantastic tale. Do not, therefore, set up equals with Allah; rather become Muslims, for the way of truth is not obscured in darkness. The traditionist Abu `Abdillah (al-Bayhaqi) transmitted on the authority of Muhammad ibn Ishaq that the Messenger of Allah sent `Amr ibn Umayyah ad-Damri to an-Najashi regarding Ja'far ibn Abi Talib and his Companions. He sent a letter with him which read thus: "In the name of Allah, the All-merciful, the Compassionate - From Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah to the Negus, the King of Abyssinia - I convey to you the praises of Allah the King, the Holy, the Accepter of Faith, the Guardian [Qur.59:23]. I furthermore bear witness that Jesus son of Mary is the Spirit of Allah and His Word, which He sent down to Mary [Qur'an. 4 : 171) , the pure and chaste virgin who then conceived Jesus, whom Allah created of His Spirit which he breathed into him -just as he created Adam with His Hand and breathed of His Spirit into him. I thus call you to the worship of the One and only Allah alone Who has no associate, and that you obey Him, follow me and believe in me and the message which was vouchsafed me. For I indeed am the Messenger of Allah. I have, moreover, sent to you my cousin Ja'far with a company of the Muslims. When they come to you, show hospitality to them and do not be arrogant. I call you and your hosts to Allah! I have conveyed my message to you and given good counsel. Peace be with those who follow true guidance." An-Najashi wrote in answer to the Messenger of Allah: "In the name of Allah, the All-merciful, the Compassionate - to Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah - from the Negus al-Ashamah ibn Abhar: peace be upon you O Prophet of Allah and Allah's mercy and blessings - there is no god but He Who guided me to Islam. I have received your letter, O Messenger of Allah, concerning the importance you give in the case of Jesus. By the Lord of the heaven and earth, Jesus does not exceed what you have mentioned concerning him. We acknowledge what you have written to us, and have thus shown hospitality to your cousin and Companions. I bear witness that you are the Messenger of Allah truly and that you tell the truth. I have, therefore, given allegiance (bay `ah) to you and your cousin. I have accepted Islam to Allah, the Lord of all beings at his hands. I have sent to you, O Messenger of Allah, Arijan ibn Ashamah ibn Abhar, I have-indeed no authority except over myself alone. If, therefore, you wish that I come to you, I would come, O Messenger of Allah. For I bear witness that what you say is the truth." An-Najashi then sent presents to the Prophet. He sent him also Mariyah the Copt, the mother of the Prophet's son Ibrahim. He sent him much clothing and aromatics, and a mare. He also sent him thirty learned men to hear his words and observe his conduct. When they arrived in Medina, the Messenger of
