What sort of fine would I expect to get for an "exhibition of speed" ticket?
I was given the ticket for doing doughnuts late at night in LA. The officer said that he could impound my car take me to jail and bla bla bla but he told me he would give me a break and just gave me the ticket to go to court. He told me just to go to trafic school and made it seem like no big deal. The ticket says I was going 25 and the reason was exhibition of speed which when I looked it up looked really serious. Can they still take my car away and what kind of fine am I looking at?

- possibly 250-500
- Supposedly, if you Rev your motor and peel out, you can be sited for "Exhibition of Speed" and receive two points on your record (not amendable by going to traffic school). These are the same two points you'd get for DUI, hit and run, according to this a fine can be almost the same as a DUI
- The ONLY reference I can find to 'Exhibition of Speed' is California Vehicle Code 23109 Speed Contests (c) ...a person shall not aid or abet in a motor vehicle exhibition of speed on any highway. But the law specifically states a highway (which also applies to streets and other roadways, but in no way would it be a parking lot). He may have cited you under Vehicle Code 23105 Reckless Driving (b) ( )2 A person who drives a vehicle in an offstreet parking facility, as defined in subdivision (c) of Section 12500, in willful or wanton disregard for the safety of persons or property is guilty of reckless driving. (c) Persons convicted of the offense of reckless driving shall be punished by imprisonment in a county jail for not less than five days nor more than 90 days or by a fine of not less than one hundred forty-five dollars ($145) nor more than one thousand dollars ($1,000), or by both that fine and imprisonment... So no vehicle confiscation, probably a fine of $145. But you might be able to make an argument that you did not engage in WILLFUL OR WANTON DISREGARD FOR SAFETY OF PERSONS OR PROPERTY if there were no other people around, nor any fixtures or items in the parking to be damaged.
