Cool things to do and see in Washington and Newyork this summer?

I'm going to NewYork and Washington for summer, any suggestions on where to visit, what to do? we'll be there around late june, early july. I mean out of the ordinary suggestions like streets with the most out there graffs, design exhibitions, markets, new architecture that kind of stuff. oh and shopping?
