Researching a thesis on pop up books, wondering about bookshops/exhibitions to visit in New York (Sept 06)?

Visiting New York 7th - 18th Sept 06. Wondering if there are any bookshops worth visiting (ie which sell a selection of pop -up/movable books, preferably old/out of print books as new titles are easy to find). Also wondering if there are any rare book collections/exhibitions on show containing pop-up/mechanical books. Any other ideas would also be much appreciated

  1. The only exhibition or collection of pop-up books that I'm familiar with is at the University of North Texas. I've seen it twice. They have two online sites devoted to their collection... Wonderful World Of Pop-Up Books: some of the images show the book's movements and pop-ups. http://www.library.unt.edu/rarebooks/exhibits/popup/catalog.htm http://www.library.unt.edu/rarebooks/exhibits/popup/19th.htm http://www.library.unt.edu/rarebooks/exhibits/popup/20th.htm Pop-UP and Movable Books: A Tour Through Their History (perhaps the better of the two sites) http://www.library.unt.edu/rarebooks/exhibits/popup2/default.htm http://www.library.unt.edu/rarebooks/exhibits/popup2/introduction.htm With books/info about Blue Ribbon Publishing, Dean and Son, French Movables, S. Louis Giraud, Voitech Kubasta, McLoughlin Brothers, Lothar Meggendorfer, Ernest Nister, S and J Fuller, 1965 to Present, Raphael Tuck and Sons, Julian Wehr
  2. You could try Barnes & Noble Book Stores: 105 5th Ave NYC 196 Broadway NYC 33 E. 17 Street NYC maybe look them up in the phone book and ask the store if they carry a display on pop up books first...it might save some time running all over the city.
